How can stories get translated into future artefacts ?

چکیده
At CID (the Centre for User Oriented IT-design at The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm) several series of workshops has been conducted in different kinds of projects (Westerlund 2003, 2005b). The workshops were used to create design ideas and to acquire understanding of presumptive users’ needs and desires (Lindquist 2004). The different projects have involved families, distributed workers, people with different kinds of disabilities, elderly people and their caretakers. In most of these projects the workshop method has been one of several methods used to construct knowledge of the design space, i.e. possible meaningful solutions (Westerlund, 2005a). Over a period of six years well over 30 workshops have been conducted, each with 10-25 participants and lasting around five hours.

Community of Practice versus Practice of the Community: Knowing in collaborative work
How do software developers, field service technicians, and medieval cathedral builders accomplish collaborative work? This paper looks at how they learn from each other by building and sharing knowledge across time and space. To illustrate this, we first present Community of Practice (CoP) as a way of understanding collaborative work which puts focus on the community and its social interaction....
متن کاملBeyond tokenistic participation: using representational artefacts to enable meaningful public participation in health service design.
A number of recent policies promote public participation in health service design. Yet, a growing literature has articulated a gap between policy aims and actual practice resulting in public participation becoming tokenistic. Drawing on theory from participatory design, we argue that choosing appropriate artefacts to act as representations can structure discussions between public participants a...

This panel will present and discuss how quantitative data analysis can help us to tell stories that bring deeper meaning to our research. In order to tell stories successfully, the researcher must understand the variety of data analysis methods available and know when to apply each kind of method. This panel will focus on these questions: • How can we tell stories about “unreal” phenomena and s...
متن کاملWhat Kind of Stories Should a Virtual Human Swap?: (Extended Abstract)
Stories are pervasive in conversation between people [5]. They are used to establish identity pass on cultural heritage, and build rapport. Often stories are swapped when one conversational participant will reply to a story with a story. Stories are also told by virtual humans [1, 6, 2]. In creating or mining stories for a virtual human (VH) to tell, there are a number of considerations that co...
متن کاملScience stories: flies, planes, worms, and lasers
"Tell a story," my mother instructs her graduate students as they prepare their talks. I will make use of her advice here, and will tell several short stories. The themes revolve around the practice of science-what motivates us to go into science and how we choose questions once we get there. I also touch on progress in scientific tools, teaching, good mentors, and good colleagues, all of which...
